sunrise

Filed under: travel, inspiration — melissa @ 9:55 am

this week i’m in NY hanging out with my three adorable cousins while their parents are on a much deserved vacation in costa rica. the only bummer has been waking up at 6 am to get them ready for school, but this morning’s sunrise was so gorgeous that i almost didn’t mind…(this photo was taken with a point and shoot camera, one and a half stops underexposed, and is straight out of camera)

just say no

Filed under: read this! — melissa @ 7:25 pm

in a move that has stunned nature-lovers across the state, governor schwarzenegger’s latest budget proposal would shut down 20% of the state’s parks, as well as cut down on lifeguards at state beaches. this would save $9 million — less than 0.1% of the state budget. the costs to our environment, our quality of life, and our confidence in state government would be incalculable. please take a quick minute to visit the environment california website and write your own letter or add your name to the pre-written form letter to be emailed to governor schwarzenegger.

etchings by Wim van der Meij

Filed under: inspiration — melissa @ 2:01 pm

i’ve already rambled on about the amazing artists that i met in amsterdam, but i haven’t yet introduced Wim van der Meij. not only does he create beautiful etchings, but he also has an amazing photoblog where he shares a new photo every day! more than 1100 images from the last three years, that is dedication. another very cool part of the website is a description of each type of landscape, here is what i learned about the framed etching i picked up at the art market het spui. “This type of landscape (in Dutch: zandverstuiving) comes into being when sheep graze away the sparse plants from very poor soil. The sand does not hold the water after rain and plants cannot grow. In this way you get this dunelike everchanging land with only some stunted trees and tenacious clumps of grass.”

coconut records

Filed under: inspiration — melissa @ 4:38 pm

last week i discovered that jason schwartzman (i heart huckabees, shopgirl and marie antoinette among others) is also a magnificent musician. you can see a very cool video on the coconut records website or listen to some music on the myspace. i nearly bought the album via itunes when i read a review that said if you order the disc through the coconut records website you get a real CD (when was the last time you got a real CD?!) and a very cool surprise. indeed. there are very few celebrities that i would like to photograph (and by that i mean hang out with), but schwartzman makes the list. hope you enjoy the music!
