i think most artists would agree that it’s always nice to hear kind words about your work. i just got this really sweet email in my inbox and it made my morning, thought i’d share it
I am a florist who happened upon your page. I am wondering where you are located. I THINK YOUR WORK IS INCREDIBLE! I would love to refer you to some of my brides. If I could get some of your cards that would be great.
one of the highlights of amsterdam is without a doubt the local artists. the first time i walked past the gaia gallery i was instantly drawn to the work but also saw harry in the midst of painting and decided the timing wasn’t right to go in. later on that evening as i walked by again i seized the moment and was overwhelmed with the experience. the first thing about these paintings that struck me, was that as beautiful as they are from afar, they become more interesting and revealing the longer they are studied. the layers of story and texture are phenomenal, i’ve never before looked at an abstract painting and felt like i was looking at a photograph - by that i mean, from far away the composition and color is nice, but once you get into the details of the piece all sorts of little stories and subtleties reveal them self. the gallery’s contents are all made by the husband team of harry van gestel & maui reple, who together have made more than 3,000 paintings and sculptures over the last 15 years; their work is also represented by sotheby’s international. i wanted to share with all of you a small insight that harry shared with me, this huge painting contains a small portrait of rembrandt - both an homage to the brilliant artist and to paraphrase harry, so that it feels as if rembrandt is looking down on the painting, offering his approval. if you are in amsterdam you must visit the gallery to see the work in person, my photographs hardly convey the magic of their art.
and here is a small slideshow i put together of some pictures i took in the gallery, and in the basement which harry graciously let me visit and delight in for a while…
after three phenomenal weeks, i am en route back to san diego where i’m looking forward to ending christmas day by climbing into my own bed. i have had the most fantastic trip and won’t even try to use words to relay the magic of the adventures that i’ve had (partly because travel and sleep deprivation have rendered me virtually incoherent but mostly because i dont think words can convey the experiences). i am going to use tomorrow to get myself back on west coast time but will begin returning phone calls and emails first thing on thursday morning.
this has to be one of the most fun, interesting, and diverse cities i’ve ever been to. not to mention the eye candy! today’s clear sky and sunshine gave me a perfect backdrop to play with, here are a handful of favorites.
yesterday was a long, long day of traveling. what should have been a two train, two hour trip took four trains and seven hours. it was also a really cold day and even though it didn’t snow everything was covered in a thick layer of frosty ice. i had a hard time understanding what the conductors were saying, but i followed the grumbling crowd as they moved from train to train, appreciating the english speaking passengers who were kind enough to guide me. apparently there were mechanical problems on two of the trains we were on, and so twice we were told to get off and change trains. turns out that the most important thing to bring when you travel to europe is a warm jacket a sense of humor. this first shot was taken at some train station (i can honestly say i have no idea which one) between antwerp and amsterdam. the next two were taken this morning off the balcony of my room at the fabulous hotel V.
this morning when i woke up and saw how overcast it was outside i thought about just staying in bed all day…but after a few minutes of moping followed by more than a little self-motivation i put on the warmest clothes i could find and ventured out. i quickly came across this group of girls offering gratis knuffels. who doesn’t love a free, belgian hug? today was one of the coldest days i’ve experienced in a long time, the canals that were fluid yesterday were frozen solid today. icy car windows, frosty gardens, you get the idea…
what a fabulous city! no wonder when i mentioned my plan to travel through belgium everyone who has been here to told me i had to make a stop in bruges. a few photos from today…
