this is my incredibly patient, kind, silly, inspiring mom. she has always encouraged and supported me to be myself, i love her beyond words.
she is a consultant, speaker, and author offering wisdom on parenting and raising joyful children.
i am applying for a very cool photography grant and need to submit 20-25 of my absolute best photos. needless to say that i am emotionally attached to certain images, so i’m having a hard time selecting the best of the best. if you are familiar with my work (or not) please send me an email with what you think are my absolute best photographs. the grant is to fund an editorial photography project that will take 9 months to complete; the subject matter and nature of the project is secret until i get funded
but it will draw on my experiences in world travel and personal interaction with an aim to inspire self-realizations and a shift in consciousness.
please have a look through my blog and websites, i have hundreds of images online and want to showcase the range of my portfolio of storytelling.
you can email me at: melissa@organicphotographs.com - share as much info as you’d like with me!
- why you like a certain image, what about it do you connect with?
- how do you you feel when you look at it?
- would you consider this image art?
- what story, if any, does this image tell you?
if we don’t yet know each other, please share as much about yourself as your comfortable with! i always enjoy hearing how people respond to my photographs.
thank you so much for your help and support!!
edit: two weeks until submission
last night i played a fabulous (ie; no board or piece throwing) game of scrabble with my beautiful friend, francesca who is in town visiting from colorado for a few days. fran kept score so i don’t necessarily believe that she won, although she did come up with gooey, my favorite word on the board…

i know that i’m a few days behind but i wanted to share some thoughts on arrival of 2008. this last year has been so incredible for me both personally and professionally, i am blessed beyond imagination. it is with many thanks to my family, friends and clients that i so definitively say this.
the other day i pulled out a book i haven’t looked at in a long time and immediately it opened to page that was dogeared from reads past. i could not think of wiser words to share at the beginning of a new year.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am i to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t benefit the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone!
And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people the permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
- Nelson Mandela, Inaugural speech, 1994
i think most artists would agree that it’s always nice to hear kind words about your work. i just got this really sweet email in my inbox and it made my morning, thought i’d share it
I am a florist who happened upon your page. I am wondering where you are located. I THINK YOUR WORK IS INCREDIBLE! I would love to refer you to some of my brides. If I could get some of your cards that would be great.
this morning i woke up to find the following email from a world-travelling, social justice photographer. after looking at her website and seeing the photographs she’s made in her life (her essays include street children, crisis pregnancy, the sex trade and trafficking, and infanticide within Brazil) her words are especially appreciated.
“i have just been googling some wedding photographers today and came upon your work.
inspiring. beautiful. touching.
as few words that come to mind as i scroll around your site.
truly inspiring!
keep up the great work and now that i have bookmarked your blog..i look forward to seeing more photos.”

i know that thanksgiving was a few days ago but it took me until now to put my thoughts to paper, or keyboard as the case may be. when i was little thanksgiving was my favorite holiday, we all would go to my uncle’s house in rural pennsylvania where the cousins would play ping pong and pinball in the basement until dinner was ready. i love being in a house full of family and yummy food and especially appreciate a whole day set aside for this very purpose. since i neglected to take a photo of the delicious almost from scratch pumpkin pie that i made, please enjoy this photo i took in NYC last month. on this thanksgiving i am particularly grateful for all of the travels i am fortunate enough to go on, a house in san diego to come home to, my health, my amazing job and of course my family, friends and wonderful clients.
